Keeping it up while in lockdown

In one sense this seems like an odd place to start a blog, but despite having Tabletop Teas as a “side hustle” for several months now, this is the first week where it is now my sole job. So, maybe this is the perfect place to start.

It might seem rather bonkers, but I decided to make Tabletop Teas my sole focus and that is both thrilling and nerve wracking. It’s made doubly nerve wracking because this is happening during the lockdown for COVID-19.

As a person with chronic health issues which put me at high risk, I take this all very seriously. I even put on my mask to check mail and do yard work. But, this does present some challenges.

One challenge is that it is difficult right now for me to get the quality ingredients from my trusted sources. At the moment I have 14 products, many which purposely have ingredients they shares with other of my products (because this means less ordering), so making sure that I have “stocked shelves” is a minefield of problem-solving and I have had to come terms with the fact that I might just not be able to stock something.

Another challenged is going to the Post Office. Before, I could pack up an order and get it out the same day or the next say. But, now, in order to protect myself (and my family) I only go once a week.

But, I think what I find most challenging is not being able to connect with people in person. Having the online store is great, of course, but primarily I had thought of this as a business that would happen at events like conventions. I really feel in my element when I am talking to people directly and I also think it is a benefit to smell and see the teas in person. So, this lockdown is challenging me to think differently, try new things, and get creative (and brave) with how I do business online.

I feel confident in my products and I love creating them. I love building report with costumers and creating a community around tea and geekery. The support and love I have received so far is what is giving me the courage to take these next big steps. So, taking this opportunity and making the best of it.

Cheers,

Tanya

  1. I just enjoyed my first cup of tea from Tabletop Teas and I could not have been more delighted. I had a cup of Mongrel. Wow, it really got my day off to a good start! I’ll be buying more, for sure.
